What it is

Sounds from Beyond sits between an audiobook and a comic, and it is meant to. Illustrated panels advance at the pace of a voice reading to you, with the words on screen as well. The two halves are independent: with the sound off it reads as an illustrated novella, and without looking at the screen it plays as audio drama. Neither is a fallback for the other.

Claire disappears the morning after she accepts Jack Holloway’s proposal. Two years later a forgotten clue pulls him back into the case, and into memories he may not be able to trust.

The craft is in the timing. Every line is narrated, and the silences between them are authored per beat rather than measured from the audio, so the pacing is identical on every device and in both languages. The art is a three-layer hybrid of photographic light, flat black ink and a loose pencil overlay, held consistent across 145 illustrations.

What may make it unusual on the App Store is what it refuses to do. No ads, no subscription, no accounts, no email capture, no daily loop, nothing to grind. It is designed to be finished, not returned to.

How it was made

The story came first, in Spanish, as a four-page treatment, and grew into five chapters. It was developed in English and ships in both languages.

The illustration and the narration were produced with generative tools. The writing, the structure and the pacing are ours. We are saying so here because it is on the store listing and you would find it anyway, and because the honest version is duller than either caricature: the tools made art we could not otherwise have afforded, and the work that took the time was deciding what went where and how long each silence should run.
